Sonic Nomads 강연 1: 유목적 청취(Nomadic Listening)에 대하여

우리의 페스티벌 Sonic Nomads는 제안합니다. 페스티벌의 참가자인 우리 모두가 현재 ‘소닉 노마드(sonic nomads, 소리의 유목민)’가 되어가는 과정 속에 있다고 말이죠. 그렇다면 소닉 노마드란 누구일까요? 무엇이 그들을 소닉 노마드로 만드는 걸까요? 우리는 어떻게 우리가 소닉 노마드라는 것을 알 수 있을까요?
소닉 노마드의 다양한 특징들 가운데, 이번 강연에서는 특별한 청취의 방식을 살펴봅니다. 우리는 이를 ‘유목적 청취(nomadic listening)’라고 부를 수 있습니다. 즉, 소닉 노마드가 어떻게 듣는지, 그들의 청취가 어떻게 나타나고 작동되는지, 그리고 그것이 여기 지금 우리의 삶과 존재에 어떤 의미를 가지는지에 대해 탐구합니다.
이번 강연은 Transients의 멤버이자 스코틀랜드 애버딘 대학교에서 전자음향음악과 사운드 아트를 가르치는 김석준 교수가 진행합니다. 김 교수는 현재 영국 학술원(British Academy)의 지원을 받아 수행되는 학제 간 연구 프로젝트 〈Futures of Listening: Water Knowledge from Two Cities (Jakarta and Istanbul)〉의 수석 연구책임자로서 이끌고 있습니다.

Sonic Nomads Lecture 1: On Nomadic Listening

Our festival Sonic Nomads proposes that we — participants in the festival — all are in the process of becoming sonic nomads. Who are sonic nomads, then? What makes them sonic nomads? How do we know we are sonic nomads? Among various traits of sonic nomads, in this lecture we examine the peculiar mode of listening that we can call nomadic listening, that is to say, how sonic nomads do listen, and how their listening emerges and is activated, and what does it do for our living and existing here and now.
The lecture is delivered by Suk-Jun Kim, a member of Transients and professor of electroacoustic music and sound art at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK. Professor Kim is currently leading as Principal Investigator a British Academy-funded interdisciplinary research project titled Futures of Listening: Water Knowledge from Two Cities (Jakarta and Istanbul).

유목적 청취의 뚜렷한 특징 가운데 하나는 타인의 청취에 민감해지는 것입니다. 특히 그들의 청취 방식이 본질적으로 유목적인 성격을 지니고 있다는 점에 대해 열린 태도로 호기심을 갖는 것입니다.
이번 Sonic Nomads의 두 번째 강연에서는 제3회 Listening Biennial에서 선정된 몇 작품들을 사례로 삼습니다. 이 작품들의 발췌 부분을 듣고 논의하면서, 우리는 유목적으로 듣는 유목민을 어떻게 들을 수 있을지 — 즉, 그러한 청취라는 행위, 능력, 가능성을 어떻게 실천할 수 있을지 —를 탐구해보려 합니다. 곧 우리는 보게 될 것이며 듣게 될 것입니다. 바로 그 청취가 우리를 유목적으로 만들 것임을 말이죠.

Sonic Nomads Lecture 2: Listening to Nomads Listening Nomadically

One distinctive characteristic of nomadic listening is to become sensitive to the listening of others, in particular, to be openly inquisitive to their listening traits that are immanently nomadic. In the second lecture of Sonic Nomads, we use some of the compositions from the third edition of The Listening Biennial as a case study. Listening to and discussing the excerpts from these compositions, we will try to exercise how we can listen to nomads who listen nomadically — the very act or the capacity/possibility of such listening, we will soon see and hear, that will make us nomadic.
