1. Hyperfield — 한이삭 (Isak Han)
Hyperfield is an auditory experiment where the sounds of reality overlap with those of imagination. Based on field recordings collected between Seoul and Yangpyeong in the summer of 2021, the artist analyzes the latent rhythms and structures within them and performs speculative sound synthesis. In this process, the recorded sounds are reconstructed into new forms of possibility, inviting the listener to experience a sensorial world that does not exist.
Listening is understood here as an act of opening the ears toward the inaudible. Hyperfield is an attempt to explore the very threshold of such perception. Within the work, field recordings and synthesized sounds are not clearly distinguishable; the two layers reflect and disturb one another, blurring the boundaries between the real and the virtual, the natural and the artificial, the sensory and the imaginary. Ultimately, the piece does not reproduce a single place but instead creates a multidimensional auditory topography.
* Speculative sound synthesis = “an approach to synthesis that moves beyond the physical causes or representational reproduction of sound, toward exploring imagined environments, futures, and unreal possibilities.”
This work began with the sounds of the places I experienced, and with the sense of unreal possibilities that emerged through those sounds. Field recording has always been my most direct way of connecting with the external world, yet it never felt sufficient. Recorded sound always seemed to miss something, and I became drawn to the idea of reconstructing and expanding the inaudible realm.
In this sense, Hyperfield takes its starting point from sounds captured in real environments, which are then re-imagined through speculative sound synthesis. Rather than reproducing reality, I sought to analyze and imagine the patterns, temporalities, and structural rhythms embedded within it. The resulting synthesized sounds occupy the threshold between actuality and fiction, forming a composite auditory landscape.
I regard listening not as a passive sense but as an act of opening onto an unperceived world. Through this work, I wanted to experiment with the ways in which listening can reconfigure space, and to explore the tensions between what we hear, what we cannot hear, and what we imagine through listening.
Hyperfield addresses a certain place, but it is no longer a fixed reality. Here, field recordings and synthesized sounds overlap and intersect, shifting perceptual boundaries and conditions of awareness. Within this sonic terrain, I hope that each listener will find their own new position of listening.
Isak Han is a sound artist, experimental musician, and digital instrument inventor based between Berlin and Seoul. His practice continuously pushes the boundaries of sonic experimentation. He develops algorithmic composition systems that generate unpredictable outcomes, and explores an abstract and personal sonic realm beyond religious or historicist expressions. Han’s works often focus on themes such as the loss of bodily orientation and the amplification of intense sonic phenomena. Through this, his practice invites listeners into heightened states of perception, where the boundaries between self and environment begin to blur. More recently, his works have merged field recordings with digital synthesis, constructing multi-layered auditory spaces that dissolve the line between reality and fiction. In doing so, he expands auditory perception and poses fundamental questions of existence and awareness through the medium of sound.

A stereo audio composition based on hydrophone and field recordings in Kalibata Pulo and Istanbul. Addressing water as an entity with its own existence and agency, the work traces the pulses and glitches that emerge from its flow. Anthroponic sounds appear as faint layers, blurring the boundaries between the organic, mechanical and living.

Workshop (13:00–17:00)
1 (Field Recording Workshop: Soundwalk Route 1)

Synopsis
Field recording is an act of embodied listening, which is key to sonic nomads. As opposed to what many would think, the ultimate goal of field recording is not to collect sounds that can be used later; rather, it is to learn how to listen on the field, with our body. When we are on a field recording, we are not recording sounds; we are recording the poetics of those sounds.
Each of these workshops, which will take about four hours, the Transients team and the participants will take a soundwalk with a small handheld digital recorder and a set of headphones. As we trace the crumbs of sounds, we will often stop and listen to those that dwell in many corners of the urban contexts - small, narrow, silent alleys on the one hand, and streets bustling with people, cars and other urban objects on the other hand, and also some fantastic and surprising unreal places where water, wind, plants, insects, birds and other animals co-exist. All these objects make, and listen to, sounds. Being a sonic nomad means to connect our listening to theirs inquisitive and openly.
What to prepare for the workshop:
A set of wired headphones with a 3.5 mm jack (not earphones or wireless headphones)
A small notebook and a pen
You will be provided with a Zoom H1n small handheld digital recorder with a small windjammer.
Lecture 1 (19:00~)
(Sonic Nomads Lecture 1: On Nomadic Listening)
김 교수는 현재 영국 학술원(British Academy)의 지원을 받아 수행되는 학제 간 연구 프로젝트 〈Futures of Listening: Water Knowledge from Two Cities (Jakarta and Istanbul)〉의 수석 연구책임자로서 이끌고 있습니다.
Sonic Nomads Lecture 1: On Nomadic Listening
Fri, Oct. 17, 19:00
Our festival Sonic Nomads proposes that we — participants in the festival — all are in the process of becoming sonic nomads. Who are sonic nomads, then? What makes them sonic nomads? How do we know we are sonic nomads? Among various traits of sonic nomads, in this lecture we examine the peculiar mode of listening that we can call nomadic listening, that is to say, how sonic nomads do listen, and how their listening emerges and is activated, and what does it do for our living and existing here and now. The lecture is delivered by Suk-Jun Kim, a member of Transients and professor of electroacoustic music and sound art at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK. Professor Kim is currently leading as Principal Investigator a British Academy-funded interdisciplinary research project titled Futures of Listening: Water Knowledge from Two Cities (Jakarta and Istanbul).

1. Camp 17 — 아이작 배글리 (Isaac Baggaley)
Camp 17 is a collage of unmanipulated field recordings taken at dusk from Redmires Plantation in Sheffield, England - the site of the largest prisoner of war camp in the United Kingdom. The area is now home to a football pitch and a young woodland dotted with ruins. The tonal sounds in this piece come from wind blowing over a hole in a goal post, the clicking sounds are from an unidentified source within a ruined water tank.

2. Quietcity — 피트 스톨러리 (Pete Stollery)
〈Quiet City〉는 sonADA(Sonic Arts Days in Aberdeen)의 Under the Skin 프로젝트 위촉으로 작곡된 작품이다.
〈Quiet City〉
Quiet City was written in response to a commission from sonADA (Sonic Arts Days in Aberdeen) to create a piece for the Under the Skin project.
I crowdsourced, via social media, a number of locations in Aberdeen where the sound had changed since before the restrictions put in place in 2020 to slow the spread of COVID-19. I received a varied and interesting selection of suggestions, but also some quite perceptive reflections on what those changes meant to people on a personal level and how, sometimes, these presented challenges for others. A good example of this is the pedestrianisation of part of Union Street which, for many, brought a welcome place to dwell and enjoy the calm of a relatively quiet place; however, the lack of access to this part of Union Street by buses meant a longer and more inconvenient journey to the shops for those with mobility issues, as well as providing an environment for the new danger of fast-moving food delivery cycles.
Quiet City is an immersive concert piece, using recordings from these locations, which moves from recognisable (and some unrecognisable) soundscapes through non-real world transformed soundscapes reflecting on a sonically changed city and how we relate to it.
With grateful thanks to the following, for the use of their sounds: Heitor Alves, Ian Booth, Christine Cameron, Bea Dawkins, Sheila Gordon, Fraser Lovie, Kathleen McBride, Robert McColl Millar, Lorna Philip, Bruce Scharlau, Anne Shipley, Jenny Shirreffs.

3. On The Transparency of Seeing Through — 션 푸케 (Sean Peuquet)
(Atlantic Center for the Arts)에서는 비행기의 소리였다.
R. Murray Schafer pointed out in 1977 that our soundscape is increasingly lo-fi, often the sound of traffic or, especially at the Atlantic Center for the Arts where this piece was composed, planes. While quiet is harder to come by, there are wonderful new sounds too, like the spray-paint can clicking of a hard-disk failure or powering on a belt sander. And yet, we increasingly fetishize a return to not just natural soundscapes, but the natural. Once we frame nature as being different (as a thing to return to), reality becomes an appearance of itself— obfuscating the naturalism of architecture, pharmaceutics, and software engineering under a guise of transparency. Are we ourselves not the nature to which we desire to return? In the “broken” appearance of this composition’s soundscape, perhaps we can hear ourselves in relation to the natural world as, echoing William Carlos Williams, “touched but not held, more often broken by the contact.”

(Candra Bangun Setyawan)
This work is a soundscape composition that captures fragments of conversations from visitors of various nationalities in the Merlion area of Singapore, interwoven with recordings of mosque sermons and the call to prayer from the Bugis district. Merlion becomes a meeting point of the world: laughter, conversations in multiple languages, footsteps, and the resonance of urban space merge into a mosaic of life that transcends borders. Meanwhile, in Bugis, the solemn sounds of the mosque call forth a spiritual dimension embedded in the city's pulse. By bringing together these two soundscapes, the work seeks to present an encounter between the cosmopolitan public sphere and the contemplative sacred space. Their interplay forms layers of listening experiences that reveal Singapore not merely as a geographical location, but as a crossroads of meaning—between commerce and prayer, tourism and tradition, bustle and stillness. This piece invites the audience not only to “hear” but to truly “listen”: to become aware of how these sounds interact, intersect, or even conflict—opening a space for reflection on identity, diversity, and coexistence in the heart of a modern city.

The sacred cosmic arcane tree and tree of life is a temple. We now know that trees exchange information with their environment. It is inside that the alchemy of sap is developed, resulting from photosynthesis. It circulates to the roots and transports the information necessary for the tree's growth, protection, and vibration. The phloem is a living tissue. It plays a role in conducting sap. I suggest that we immerse ourselves in it in order to taste its richness.

(Clovis McEvoy)
At the zoological and botanical gardens in Hong Kong, sitting in the darkness before the break of dawn I recorded the morning songs of Siamang, Buff Cheeked Gibbons, and many other primates. As I closed my eyes, listening to the achingly beautiful glissandos, I was transported far from the hustle and bustle and to the arboreal forests of Southeast Asia. When I listened back to the recording I was struck by how different the reality was from my own internal imagination. Instead of the expansive, inspiring sound that I thought I’d heard, the recorded audio was constrained, full of background traffic noise, passing airplanes, and the cold metallic clank of cages. Calls for Cages critically examines the practice of displaying animals in cages for human pleasure. It places the calls and songs of primates within an imagined natural landscape, before stripping that sound of its environmental context and brutally reshaping it to fit with a new, human imposed reality. In the closing section, we are finally presented with the original, unedited audio of the city waking up, and the animal calls slowly diminishing to silence.

1. Sadarghat — 벤 하미드 (Ben Hamid)
Taking inspiration from composers such as Luc Ferrari, this piece offers a ‘sonic photographic slide’ of life at the Sadarghat, exploring the relationship between the natural and urban environment along the Buriganga River in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Once known as ‘the Venice of the East’ the waterways of old Dhaka function not only for trade, commerce and communication but also establish an urban design character and culture based upon water. The wide expanse of the river contrasts with the narrow, winding streets, expanding the horizon and providing a major navigation link between Dhaka and other parts of the country.
The growth of the city has introduced challenges to the natural and cultural functions, with dams and embankments interfering with normal river flows while industrial waste, sewage and oil slicks have caused the once mighty Buriganga to be on the verge of dying.
In this piece the variety of life and activity can be witnessed. From the market traders unloading fresh produce to the passenger filled launches setting out to provincial towns. Between the passing engines, the rhythmic pulse of the shipyards becomes apparent with muscle and sinew working to recommission and recycle vessels that have been long forgotten by the original purchasers. The gentle lap of the water on the ferryman's boat and the cry of parrots and kites wheeling overhead.

Pendlerdrøm (or "Commuterdream") is a soundscape composition that recreates a commuter's trip home from the Central Train Station in Copenhagen. At two points, one in the station and the other on the train, the commuter lapses into a daydream in which the sounds that were only half heard in the station return to reveal their musical qualities. It is hoped that the next day the commuter will hear the musicality of the station's soundscape in a different manner as a result of the dream; the rest of us may discover the very same aspects the second time we hear the work.

3. Life within 500 meters — 자오 샤오야 (Xiaoya Zhao)
This sound-based project uses binaural listening to explore the emotional and social dimensions of perceiving one’s immediate surroundings. Focusing on the artist’s neighbourhood in London’s West Ham, the work captures ambient sounds and informal voices from within a loosely defined 500-meter radius — a symbolic space of the "nearby". These everyday sonic fragments — passing trains, market chatter, birdsong, and distant conversations — are reframed as active carriers of memory and presence. The work is informed by social anthropologist Xiang Biao’s concept of the “disappearance of the nearby”, which critiques how urban life has eroded the emotional and social substance of proximity. By listening closely to the overlooked, the artist invites us to reimagine our relationship to place — not through spectacle, but through subtle acts of attention.

Xiaoya Zhao is a multidisciplinary sound artist whose practice spans experimental film, sound design, land art, installation, and photography. Born and raised in China, Xiaoya holds a degree in Music and Sound Recording from the University of York and is currently completing a Master’s in Design Audio Experience at UCL, where she combines technical rigor with conceptual inquiry. Her work is rooted in attentive listening to everyday sounds and objects, privileging subtle details over imposed narratives. Embracing an approach that lets materials and sonic elements unfold autonomously, she invites meaning to emerge organically. As she reflects, “In an autonomous state, things will flow,” embodying her commitment to artworks that resist fixed interpretations.
«varech» is about being stranded. It comes from places in isolation, from which the outside can be seen flowing around. An empty museum, an island locked in the tidal currents, a home in the forest frozen; points where layers of angst and focus are sewn. Inside the apparent stasis, processes unfolding and approaching larger forces immingle. Hence appear the sounding shapes of coastline memories and innermost motions, a watchtower turned towards forthcoming change.

leo magnien (1985) works with sounds, fixed and living as well. During night shifts in a radio station, he discovered the poetic nature of acousmatic sound and transmission. He has since developed a practice of listening that results in the use of phonography as a basis of all his works. He considers sound as a tactile media that weaves us in the world. His focus is on the subtle variations, the tenuous perceptions, and how to present these to the listener. He currently lives in a natural zone in northern france.
5. Fluxus, pas trop haut dans le ciel — 하이메 헤이스 (Jaime Reis)
이 연작에는 〈Fluxus, Dimensionless Sound for Flute and Electronics〉(2012, 파리 Festival for the Liberation of Sound and Image 위촉), 〈Fluxus, Transitional Flow〉(2013, 포르투갈 Festival Primavera 위촉), 〈Fluxus, Lift〉(2013, Festival Monaco Électroacoustique 초연) 등이 포함된다.
This piece belongs to the cycle Fluxus, whose pieces are inspired by elements of physics and in which musical elements that relate to certain physical phenomena related to fluid mechanics are developed. Other pieces of this cycle are Fluxus, Dimensionless sound for flute and electronics (commissioned by Festival for the Liberation of Sound and Image, Paris, 2012), Fluxus, Transitional Flow (commissioned by Festival Primavera, Portugal, 2013), Fluxus, Lift (premiered at the Festival Monaco Électroacoustique 2013), among other compositions in progress. This particular piece is centered in ideas related to what I have called "aerial" soundscapes. The formal development is based on 3 pillars that were inspired Bernie Krause's concepts geophony, biophony, and anthropophony (géophonie, biophonie, anthropophonie). The sections are interconnected through specific spatial movements that show our hide their own paths, recognition of sound sources and other events in order to create moments that are more or less clear in the perception of themselves. The sound spatialization acts as a central musical parameter, where the distribution of sound within the loudspeakers is related not only to different kinds of movements and spatial "shapes", but related and associated to spectral changes, different speeds and other parameters that make the spatial movements (paths) to be more, less and even unrecognizable. Some spatial "shapes" or "paths" relate different parameters in order to create movements that I have called "elliptical rotations", "spirals", "rotations", "spectral explosions" related to upwards or downward movements of sound or into "sound suctions", "walls of sound", "points", "geometrical shapes", "lissajous curves", "sound swarms", and others. Such "shapes" / "paths" aren't intended to be listened as a catalogue os movements, but they are relate formal aspects of the macro structure, but also from the "energy flow" that is present in each of the used sound worlds.

The composition of Arioso grew from a soundscape experience on a humid September night in Tappan Square in Oberlin (Ohio, USA), where a chorus of crickets and the constant electronic beep of pedestrian crossing signals formed a texture of cyclically interlocking pitch and throbbing granular noise. My field recording of this unlikely duet between the purity of an artificial pulsing tone and the spatially rich stridulation of insects underpins the structure of the piece. A flock of jackdaws circling in flight near my home just after dawn provides another window on the world of natural sound, supporting the work’s emphatic rhythmic shapes. While the form might be loosely thought of as reflecting the traditional recitative-like ‘arioso,’ the title (Arioso = ‘airy’) is also intended to be more deeply indicative of the atmosphere of sensual mystery I found with the air set in vibrant motion that night in Oberlin.
Arioso was realized in 2021 in the Music, Technology and Innovation Research Laboratory at De Montfort University (Leicester, UK), and was premiered on June 13, 2021 by Thomas Gorbach during the concert Neue Musik in St Ruprecht – Simplicity at Ruprechtskirche in Vienna (Austria). Arioso was awarded both the 2nd Prize ex æquo and the 1st Audience Prize ex æquo in the 14th Destellos Electroacoustic Composition Competition (Mar del Plata, Argentina, 2022).
