1. Solitary Venice — 실뱅 수클라예 (Sylvain Souklaye)
"Solitary Venice" is the sonic conclusion of the PUBLIC RESEARCH I conducted in Venice. The PUBLIC RESEARCH was and is still about public space, especially the relationship between tourists and locals existing via capitalism as an untold language. "Solitary Venice" is an expression of Venice at 4 am without tourists, without locals, just the city's emptiness, the nagging brutality of the sea, a dysfunctional ticket machine, and patient seagulls.
Sylvain Souklaye is a French Caribbean Brooklyn-based live artist, sonic maker and author. His craft and mission go beyond and deeper than the question of identity. Following the idea of the rhizome, Souklaye digs in the sensitivity and history laying in the interiority of broken bodies, environmental urgencies and political retribution.
Souklaye started his artistic journey focusing on DIY social justice, or vandalism as he called it, and defined it as the necessary destruction for justice and self-designation. Lyon, his hometown, carries the Canut revolts heritage and merges with his Neg marron origin from Martinique (freedom and rebellion movement), to obtain a perfect cocktail, a cocktail molotov.
Souklaye then began to write action poetry and interwove it with protean political and visual happenings —sometimes extreme, often borderline, his messages traveled from guts to guts across all corners of France, Switzerland and Belgium. But it is during his durational live radio show at the renowned French independent radio station RCT that he started to craft what would become his uniquely lyrical and gut-wrenching live experiences.
This inner quest took other forms with his writings — le jour du fleau which explores the duality of the night and Solus which cuts deep into grief — and his obsession with noise and its sonic linguistics. The noise from and inside the city shaped his approach to granular synthesis. Those raw words and intense sounds created the condition for his live experiences and installations.
Interiority is at the center of Souklaye's body of work; collective intimacy and epigenetic dialogues are the inner spaces where he spends time exploring and inviting the audience (in)to. Each living soul is a part of his live experiences, and there are no active or passive members of the audience, only those who want to be activated. His shows are self-centered yet collective live experiences that reveal what is left inside him and us.
2. Electropoem No.12 — 알리 발리기 (Ali Balighi)
Electropoem No. 12 is part of an ongoing series that explores the relationship between spatial sound and poetic structure. This piece uses unfiltered field recordings captured on Mars by NASA’s Perseverance rover, featuring mechanical interactions with the Martian surface and filtered atmospheric textures. Composed using the ED2-07 tuning system (dividing the octave into seven equal steps), the piece emphasizes alien acoustics and atmospheric properties to evoke new forms of musical expression.

3. Soma — 베라 이바노바 (Vera Ivanova)
The title of the piece is taken from ancient Indian mythology, where soma is a sacred, intoxicating drink used in Vedic rituals, as well as the divinity of this drink and later on of the Moon. In addition, this is a morphological root of the word somatic, etc.
The main feature of the piece is the use of recognisable sounds and their transformation. These sounds consist of instrumental sounds (bowed cymbal, bass drum, orchestra string glissando, piano repetitions, bowed vibraphone, and wind chimes), sounds of environment (aeroplane, noise, crowd, scream), and a few spoken words (‘this is me’).
In the process of development of the piece, these sounds are repeated in certain contexts and transformed (using computer programs Sound Hack and plug-ins/filters of Logic Audio Gold). With instrumental sounds, my aim was to use the computer software as a sort of ‘extended techniques’ to achieve an effect of gradual unfolding and transformation of still recognisable sound. The noise of a crowd is treated as musical texture as the words are ‘smashed’ to emphasise certain phonemes and vowels in a continuous moving sound mass.
The main idea of the composition was to make a journey from initial recognisable sounds through their transformations to different levels of external and internal worlds and their co-existence.

4. Through the Pipes, Submerged — 아난타 위자야라나 (Ananta Wijayarana)
After several months of experiencing Kalibata Pulo (a residential area in South Jakarta), one of the new experiences I witnessed was the sewerage in this area. Located near the river, the domestic waste disposal was very open, and I could see all kinds of waste being discharged into the river. The sewage that is discharged directly into the river is not fully controlled by the local community. The unavoidable structural problems regarding the disposal system seem to be the nature of the river to be used as a waste reservoir. In the words of JJ Rizal, an Indonesian historian at a public discussion, the river in Jakarta is now a big garbage can. This is something that has become familiar to the local community. From this initial observation, I began recording the sounds of water coming out of the pipes. Over the course of about 6 months of recording the sounds of these pipes, a thought came to my mind: what activities are being carried out behind these pipes? This became the starting point of my work. Starting from domestic activities, the production of waste, its journey, until it ends up in the river as the final disposal site of the waste. The sounds from the wastes that I recorded, I arranged and integrated with the sounds of my daily dishwashing activities. I recorded the sound of traffic to emphasise the urban location. I also used a hydrophone to capture the sounds in the river. This is important for my work to bring out the idea of the river as the final place where these wastes gather.
From these sound sources that I composed, the narrative of the composition is a full circle of the life of water waste: From the waste production washing the dish, dump the water through the pipes, arrive at the river, submerged to the bottom, back to the pipe, and end up again at the dish washing activity. I wanted to give the audience a sound experience of how the flow of waste is produced and circulates. Until the climax, what does it feel like when we are submerged by our own waste?

(Juan Carlos Vasquez)
"Mono No Aware" is a profound Japanese concept that delves into the sentiment of nostalgia, grasping the ephemeral nature of existence. In this acousmatic composition, we embark on a mental odyssey through the memories of a train traveler in Japan, where recollections blend and twist, forming a captivating tapestry of soundscapes. The piece endeavors to push the boundaries of timbral exploration within the realm of acousmatic music, all while presenting a non-linear perception of time. These sonic journeys were meticulously captured through field recordings in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto by the composer.

6. Rikers’ Requiem — 한스 쿠즈미치 (Hans Kuzmich)
「Rikers’ Requiem」
Combining field recordings around New York City’s Rikers Island jail complex with intercepted radio communication of the jail staff, Rikers’ Requiem anticipates the jail’s scheduled closing. It sonically reimagines a future where the island is cleansed by the surrounding waters and overtaken by fugitive, more-than-human life.

Makelab Workshop: Hydrophone Building
Thu, Oct. 16, 13:30 – 18:00 | Number of participants: 15
Synopsis
The Makelab Workshop is about making your own listening device — a hydrophone — as a tool for embodied exploration of sound. Unlike conventional microphones that capture air vibrations, hydrophones extend our ears underwater, revealing the resonances of rivers, ponds, or even the vibrations within a simple glass of water. Building a hydrophone yourself is not only a technical practice but also a way of tuning into the materiality of sound.
In this four-and-a-half-hour workshop, participants will learn the basics of piezoelectric transducers, soldering, and simple circuit construction to create their own hydrophone. Once completed, this DIY device will expand the possibilities of listening and recording in future soundwalks and field recording sessions. With it, streams, fountains, drains, or even everyday containers can all become unexpected sources of sonic discovery.
What to prepare for the workshop:
A curious attitude and willingness to use your hands
Notebook and pen for sketching notes
All necessary electronic parts, soldering tools, and assembly materials will be provided
Deep Listening Session 1 (19:00~)
1. Sous l’écorce des pierres – promenade [Under the Bark of Stones – A Stroll] — 질 고베일 (Gilles Gobeil)
To Folkmar Hein
Most of the sounds heard here were given to me by Folkmar Hein, who commissioned this work. These sounds, which he recorded himself, can be construed as having no specific meaning. Would it be possible to integrate them into a larger project aimed at evoking the very long forest walks Hein is regularly taking around Berlin? He once told me that, after a few hours of strolling, your perception of time gradually becomes altered. I started imagining that the path to that mental state could trigger a reverie hidden under the bark of stones.

Gilles Gobeil compositions approach what is known as “cinema for the ear”; many of them are inspired by literary works and seek to “visualize” them through the medium of sound.
2. Nearby the Blackbird — 풀랴 우자녹 (Fulya Uçanok)
This work grew out of a curiosity and interest in going visiting and travelling sonically alongside blackbirds. It was created with a series of early morning field recordings made during a two-week stay in Graz, Austria in 2024, where I rose at 4 a.m. each day to listen, witness, and record their morning songs. The title draws inspiration from the documentary filmmaker and feminist theorist, Trinh Minh-ha’s concept of “speaking nearby,” which embraces a mode of relationality that listens and responds, not by speaking "about" the other, but by sounding "with" them in sonic proximity.
This work invites listeners into a reflective space, as it explores the complex (im)possibilities and (mis)understandings that emerge when sounding nearby another voice; human and not.

Daylesford Naturalix is a fixed media composition created entirely from environmental field recordings made in Daylesford, on Dja Dja Wurrung Country in central Victoria, Australia. Captured in 2021 during a COVID-19 lockdown, these recordings formed part of a broader practice-led research project into mobile music technologies and ecological listening. The work was completed in 2025 using granular synthesis and digital sound manipulation. Drawing solely on the original recordings—birdsong, creeks, wind, ambient textures—Daylesford Naturalix transforms these sounds through intricate manipulation. The result is a reimagined soundscape that retains the specificity of place while extending its expressive possibilities through digital techniques. Framing the environment as both subject and co-composer, the work reflects on temporal and spatial presence—on pausing, listening, and attuning to the subtle rhythms of the more-than-human world. It contributes to contemporary ecocritical sonic art by dissolving boundaries between artistic practice, ecological awareness, and technological media

iubar is an award-winning collaborative project hailing from Australia, led by Polish-born Martin K. Koszolko, a music producer known for his work with electronic and indie pop music acts KOshowKO and Philosophy of Sound. Martin holds a PhD in Remote Music Collaboration technologies and is an accomplished sound researcher. Iubar project’s signature sound is story-driven ambient, created using a blend of analogue and digital instrumentation and featuring field recordings and mobile technologies.
iubar’s origins can be traced back to 2009 when Martin’s high school friend from Poland, Jarek Binkowski, recorded multiple electric guitar drones and riffs, which became the foundation for the first compositions. Over the years, iubar has collaborated with other talented musicians, including Modus Op, resulting in the piece ‘Untold,’ which features private family conversations and describes the hardship experienced during World War II. In 2019, iubar released their collaborative single ‘Nowy,’ produced by musicians from England, Australia and Croatia who had never met face-to-face. iubar project’s live performances incorporate mobile music-making technologies, as well as site-specific audience sampling techniques that Martin developed through live performances in Poland and Australia. The project has received international recognition, earning two Best Music Awards in 2021 for iubar’s music featured in the short film ‘Earth’ as well as receiving the award for Best Music in the Green Philosophy Film Festival in 2022. The awarded compositions are featured alongside other material on iubar project’s debut album “Survival Tactics“, released in March 2023 on Vivarium Recordings.
4. Three Returns —
Three Returns is a part of the Three Cities Project by three composers–Pete Stollery, Ross Whyte and Suk-Jun Kim–and uses the sound recordings collected by the team while they were making journeys to three cities, Aberdeen, Bergen, and St. Petersburg.
Three Returns is the composer’s revisit to the sound materials, some of which he himself collected and some of which others did. Through the revisit, the composer wanted to become sensitive to what he has experienced, remembered, forgotten, and imagined. To the composer, Three Returns is evidence of both the fragility of our memory and fascination of place–the very reason for which place haunts us.

5. Sounds from my window — 프라부드하 무코파드야이 (Prabuddha Mukhopadhyay)
This work deals with the sounds that I have encountered in my life almost every day. All of these elements represent a time of day. Every element has its own story, from the Aazan in the morning to the kids in the evening, everything has a personal memory associated with it. However, these recordings are around 3-5 years old. The soundscape has changed; the green field that was there is now being massacred for a building to rise. The children are thus absent. This work represents a time when I also had the ‘luxury’ to sit idle and record and listen to what was happening from my window.

6. Makuta — 펠리페 오톤도 (Felipe Otondo)
Makuta is a composition that blends Afro-Cuban and Congolese rhythms with modern synthesis and urban field recordings from Chile and England. It invites listeners on a sonic journey where tradition meets innovation, merging intricate rhythmic patterns with evolving soundscapes to reflect on the fluidity of time. Layers of percussion, electronic textures, and environmental sounds interact in a continuous, organic dialogue. Makuta is a dynamic and immersive exploration of rhythm, place and memory, where past and present converge in compelling sonic form.

Eloisa Matheu has a vast collection of recordings of nature, and particularly valuable is the bird collection, she is at present in the ornithology department of the Natural History Museum of Barcelona. The use of field recordings for experts in electroacoustic music create a rather complex task, there is a lot of background sound, which may or may not be used in exceptional ways, but I rather decided to use extremely strong cleaning systems in order to get to a very clear set of samples to be used in a composition. So basically the piece is structured in a lot of very short sounds spatially organized, some longer sequences and a set of 4 short birds chorus distributed along the piece. In our studio the piece is distributed in 14 loudspeakers. In this case I think a stereo version is also enjoyable, due to the silences.

8. Exploring Silence — 바이 보이(Boyi Bai)
이 사운드스케이프 작품은 Cities and Memory와 Exodus Adventure Travels가 공동 기획한 위촉 프로젝트 〈The Sound of Adventure〉에서 시작되었다.
This soundscape composition originated from The Sound of Adventure, a commissioned project curated by Cities and Memory in collaboration with Exodus Adventure Travels in celebration of the latter’s 50th anniversary. The project invited field recordists to capture the “sense of adventure” experienced when encountering a place for the first time. Rather than approaching adventure through dramatic or exotic sonic events, I chose to explore silence as an adventure. This decision was inspired by R. Murray Schafer’s concept of hi-fi and lo-fi soundscapes. I sought to uncover, within lo-fi urban soundscapes, those rare sonic moments that R. Murray Schafer would recognise as hi-fi—delicate, meaningful sounds that manage to surface through layers of noise. I defined this journey as “the struggle of silence.” In Japan, I deliberately avoided planning specific recording sites beforehand, allowing myself to experience the country with the ears of a curious wanderer. My goal was to discover and document spontaneous sonic encounters, especially those where “silence” asserts itself in environments typically dominated by sound: bustling streets, crowded tourist sites, and vibrant restaurants. The field recordings captured during my trip were later transformed into a soundscape composition, blending ambient music with location-specific sound materials. These fleeting, delicate sounds embody an adventurous spirit of their own: they do not demand attention but quietly hold space against the weight of their surroundings. Exploring Silence – Japan invites listeners to engage with the overlooked layers of everyday acoustic experience. It is a sonic meditation on fragility, presence, and the quiet resilience of silence in a noisy world.

1. Le Chant du bollard (The song of the bollard) — 크리스티앙 엘루아 (Christian Eloy)
It’s a complete field recording session, kind of sound film of a passage through a lock on the River Rhône (France). The water can sustain an entire life and intense human activity full of strange sounds for “terrestrials”; navigating in rivers where the sound environment is all fluidity can also create shocks, more or less violent, since the water is in movement. This, therefore, is water heard from a boat passing through one of the immense locks on the Rhône, where everything is amplified and takes on a grandiose fullness.
A bollard is a vertical sliding system to which boats tie up in locks; it emits discontinuous random sounds during the whole time the water is falling in the lock, and there are about a dozen that “sing” in this way in this gigantic sonorous cathedral.

The work is contrasting aural places of intimacy and enclosure with expansive spaces and propagates through their interaction. The title is borrowed from a painting by René Magritte, depicting two coffins seated in a mountainous landscape. The source materials for the work have been recorded with an 18 channel microphones arrange in a globe shape, encoded in Higher Order Ambisonics. The work was completed with the support of Musiques & Recherches at the Métamorhose d'Orphée studio during in the summer of 2024.

4. Water Experience in Kalibata Pulo — 반 루베르 파렌센 (Van Luber Parensen)
Departing from a series of experiences walking in the dense environment of Kalibata Pulo as an urban village, with their random yet organized intensity, are experiences which blur the boundaries between what is calm and moving; what is still and what might change in the future; between the present and the past. The exploration of musical aspects and textures of the sound of water, in particular, in clogged pipes and sprinkle of rain, followed by spatial codes, both real and imaginary; environmental sounds, human activity, as well as inserts of reflective moments and their memory of water.

Acousma is an electroacoustic sound composition based on my sound walk practice. It is created through the manipulation of environmental field recordings taken from various locations in Istanbul. The piece constructs a spatial atmosphere evoking a sense of emptiness and infinity, while the use of improvised voice and distant Eastern tones evokes a return to the earthly.

6. Entanglement —

This work is a sound art piece based on the urban soundscape and tree ring data, presenting a nonlinear perception of time.
The urban soundscape, recorded live in Wiesbaden, Germany, unfolds along the flow of time. However, the playback speed continuously fluctuates according to the artist’s recorded heart rate during the recording session. These variations in playback speed are accompanied by corresponding changes in pitch. The original recording lasts approximately 15 minutes.
Through this, the audience experiences the relativity of time as influenced by the artist’s physiological state, evoking a nonlinear perception of time. It mirrors the sensation where time seems to speed up when deeply focused and slow down when doing nothing.
Additionally, rhythms created by reversing sound generated from approximately 100 years of tree ring data—collected from a tree that has coexisted with the city—are played simultaneously with the forward-moving soundscape.
The tree rings, recorded nonlinearly due to internal and external factors, form irregular waveforms that generate unique rhythms. These rhythms progress faster than the 15-minute urban soundscape, repeating and intertwining past and present, thereby expressing the flow of time as a multi-layered, nonlinear phenomenon rather than a linear sequence.
Through this work, the audience can experience a nonlinear perception of time conveyed through sound.
