Humans and animals, co-inhabitants of the same planet, come together in this composition through field recordings made across Greece. They gurgle, cackle, speak, cry out, sing, chant, and pray. A short journey from the countryside to the city (Athens) unfolds through the sounds of turkeys, owls, and chickens, alongside babies and teenagers, farmers at open-air markets, and itinerant street vendors, as well as songs and sacred chants. No audio effects were used in this composition. All sounds were recorded in Athens and at my village Raches, Peloponnese in Greece using a Zoom H5 recorder.

〈Heaven in Spiritual Darkness〉is an electroacoustic composition that explores spiritual reflection, ritualistic repetition, and the emotional dualities of human faith. Grounded in experimental signal processing and acoustic capture, the piece investigates a central question aligned with the festival's theme "listen with": What happens when we pray in the dark? The conceptual foundation of the work draws from traditional Buddhist Dedicatory Verses—chants traditionally recited to transmit blessings and radiate light. In Buddhist practice, these verses are repeated in strict cycles of 7 or 49 times, numbers that symbolise deep structural transformation, passage, and renewal. While traditional prayers radiate warmth and light, Heaven in Spiritual Darkness shifts the axis into shadow. It opposes subtle sonic interactions and delicate acoustic textures against sudden, intense electronic dynamics, evoking the friction between opposing emotional states: hope and despair, pursuit and loss, breaking and healing, belief and betrayal, presence and absence. Rather than presenting static recorded chants, the piece integrates a single field recording of a Taiwanese's pray—capturing subtle textural friction, breath, and physical spatial decay—directly into electronic processing pipelines and pitch-tracking workflows. every drone, spectral wash, and synth-like texture in the piece is re-processed directly from this single sentence. Through this methodology, shifting bright vocal vibrations into dark, spectral, and tense electronic territories directly mirrors the process of praying in the dark. The work is conceived for an ideal presentation inside a completely darkened room, anchored by a single visual element: a single white torch light positioned at the centre of the space, pointing directly upward. Listeners are invited to sit or lie down on the floor to experience the piece deeply.

3. speaking ground — Xiao Wen (싱가포르)

〈speaking ground〉is inspired by the four months I spent living abroad in Helsinki. The integration of modern city life with its surrounding nature, its international community, and the sounds that surrounded me were unlike anything I had experienced before in Asia. While piecing the soundscape together, I was curious about the limits of hearing oneself – how sounds can never be fully neutral, its meaning given by body, medium and expectations. During one of my lessons, we went on a sound walk and recorded sounds without prejudice for whether they were "good," and without expectation of whether they would ever be used in a piece. I recorded candid sounds like children playing on the swings, conversations drifting between strangers, and a train passing by heard underwater, captured with a hydrophone. Similarly, I suspended judgment when approaching Kontula, a neighbourhood with a mixed reputation partly due to its immigrant population and its history of violence and drugs. I listened and found a neighbourhood alive with cultural diversity. My friends and I recorded excerpts of literature in our native tongues: Swedish poetry, including Edith Södergran's Dagen svalnar…; a Spanish excerpt from Ramón Gómez de la Serna's ¡Rebeca!; a Chinese excerpt from Eileen Chang's Love (爱); among others. For a non-native listener, meaning is stripped away and what one focuses on instead is rhythm, breath and pitch. That threshold, where comprehension ends and resonance begins, mirrors how an outsider often "hears" a place like Kontula: through rumour and reputation before ever encountering it directly. 〈speaking ground〉 treats the body and the neighbourhood as parallel acoustic spaces: both hold sound, transform it, and release it changed. In bringing these recordings together, the piece asks not what a place or a voice means, but what it means to listen without prejudice.

4. The Five Elements — juice cui (중국·영국)

[6'37"]

〈The Five Elements〉 is a fixed-media sound work based on field recordings gathered across the UK and Shanghai. Drawing on the Chinese philosophy of Wuxing—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—the piece explores listening as a relational process shaped by place, movement, memory, material, and transformation. Rather than treating the Five Elements as fixed substances, Wuxing understands them as forces that continually generate, restrain, and transform one another. The work applies this relational structure to sound: listeners are invited to listen with water, wood, fire, metal, earth, urban infrastructures, everyday objects, and the memories carried by recorded places. The composition brings together recordings of the River Thames and the Huangpu River, sounds from the Shanghai Botanical Garden, flames recorded inside a pizza shop, and an antique wooden piano encountered in Edinburgh. These recordings are combined with foley, classical instruments, modular synthesis, and processed environmental sound. The recordings do not function only as documents of specific locations. They retain traces of movement, human presence, architecture, weather, cultural memory, and non-human activity. By bringing environments from the UK and Shanghai into the same stereo listening space, the work creates a translocal encounter between distant places. In relation to the theme listen with, The Five Elements asks how listening might occur with rather than simply toward an environment. The piece proposes field recording as both documentation and transformation. Recorded environments are reorganised into a cyclical sonic journey in which sounds grow, ignite, settle, sharpen, and dissolve.

5. The Pebble — Kostas Frantzis (그리스)

〈The Pebble〉is a soundscape composition that begins with the imaginative moment in which a pebble "falls asleep" and is carried along by the currents of the sea. At the heart of the composition, the stone is examined as a sound-producing source, where its rigid material, through various processes, acquires mobility, rhythm, and sonic textures suggesting fluidity, fragmentation, and swirling motion. The resulting sound material is sometimes presented independently and sometimes embedded within field recordings, inviting the listener to immerse themselves in an imaginative and mysterious soundscape. The composition explores listening as a shared process between the human body, natural materials, and the environments they inhabit. Rather than treating field recording as a documentary practice, The Pebble approaches it as a dialogue with place. The recorded sounds are not presented as static representations of a landscape but as traces of an encounter, where gesture, resonance, and environmental presence continuously shape one another. Most of the sonic material was created using LithOSCillator, a DIY instrument developed by the artist, consisting of two stones fitted with piezoelectric microphones and extended through custom algorithmic processes designed in Max/MSP. This hybrid instrument functions simultaneously as a means of performance, recording, and listening, revealing sonic details that would otherwise remain imperceptible.

6. Morphogenesis — Enrico Dorigatti (이탈리아)

〈Morphogenesis〉 is an acousmatic composition named after the homonym biological process through which a complex living organism is shaped through the cooperative efforts of several simpler entities. Morphogenesis highlights simultaneously the macrostructure and the small, elementary sonic entities shaping it. The composition of the piece relied on an original library of field recordings; the sonic affordances of the sounds included guided the development of both the sound design and compositional processes and, consequently, the evolution of the piece itself. Listening with the material: the piece relies on a strict self-limitation embedded by the composer in the creative process. This constraint forced, at composition time, to an intimate assimilation of the sonic matter, fostering deep exploration rather than a superficial overview. Listening with emergence: the compositional structure was not predetermined. Rather, it emerged through an iterative feedback loop unfolding between sound design, digital manipulation of the sonic material, and development of the composition. Listening with complex ecologies: by blending highly controlled studio-sculpted and designed sonic objects with raw, field recorded sound material, the piece bridges the gap between internal, crafted micro-spaces and external sonic environments beyond human control. The restricted sound library stems from three distinct sources: 1. Door lock (mechanical): recorded via close-miking in an enclosed corridor. 2. Plastic envelope (synthetic): soft, transient-rich textures captured by close-miking in an acoustically insulated recording booth. 3. Drain canal (environmental field recording): recorded outdoor, this source primarily features a rhythmic water stream choked by debris made from a distance, naturally embedding environmental leakages, both natural and anthropogenic.

7. Archetexture #2 – Wall — David Rossato (이탈리아)

〈Archetextures〉 is a series of electroacoustic compositions (forthcoming on Dissipatio Records) exploring the archetypes underlying both the phenomenon and the practice of architecture. It represents a personal attempt to give substance and sonic texture to symbols or configurations of spatial - and, more profoundly, existential - experiences. 〈Archetexture #2 - Wall〉 revolves around the concept of the wall - not merely as a boundary, but as a barrier, an obstacle, and a symbol of division and separation. The piece's primary imagery is that of a 'wall of sound' that constructs itself brick by brick, rising to fill the space and forging a rift: it divides, creating a discontinuity in space that severs the 'inside' from the 'outside'. While it may offer protection, it does so with a defensive, almost paranoid connotation. Indeed, the wall is an insurmountable limit that thwarts passage; as such, it becomes a vessel for isolation, alienation, and the breakdown of communication. Furthermore, it stands as a symbol of resistance, solidity, and apparent immobility - yet, ultimately, it too can crumble.

After completing a Master's in Gestalt Counselling, fascinated by the use of sound in helping relationships and, above all, by healing practices used in many traditional and mystical cultures, I became passionate about transpersonal psychology, music therapy techniques, and shamanism (a path I practise and guide others on).

8. Entramadas Anfibias — Léa Roger & Cristina Canedo (벨기에·볼리비아)

[26'05", 2026]

〈Entramadas Anfibias〉 is our first collaborative radio sound piece, created following a series of sound expeditions carried out in the Carrasco and Tariquía National Parks in Bolivia. The first version of the piece was originally commissioned by Radio Panik for the Radia network (an international collective of 24 free radio stations across 17 countries). It was broadcast through the Radia network and presented at the Sur Aural Festival (Cochabamba, Bolivia, June 2023), Radiophrenia Festival (Glasgow, August 2023), and the Tsonami Festival (Chile, November 2023). There, we found ourselves immersed in the paradoxes of conservation, far removed from any romanticized vision of nature. Carrasco National Park serves as an ecological corridor and is home to the last remaining Sehuencas water frogs, an aquatic species endemic to the Bolivian Andes. Today, this species is threatened with extinction by the construction of a major hydroelectric dam. Tariquía National Reserve faces a different but equally pressing threat: hydrocarbon extraction. By 2026, the situation has reached a critical point. In Tariquía, community leaders defending the reserve are being persecuted and criminalized for attempting to protect this national park, the region's only major water reservoir. For this reason, the piece was revisited in 2026 and transformed into an act of denunciation—a poetic and political proposal that uses sound art to reveal what censorship prevents from being expressed through words. It unfolds in three movements: the first reveals the relationships connecting local communities with the more-than-human world; the second evokes dawn breaking over Tariquía; and the third exposes the impact of extractivism on the territory while simultaneously giving voice to the extraordinary resilience of life on Earth.

9. The Game — D A Calf

The Game takes its name from the attempts made by asylum-seekers to reach the EU via the overland border between Bosnia and Croatia. Located on the so-called Western Balkan migrant route—and only 10 kilometres from the border—Bihać has for the last 15 years been used as a point from which to attempt 'the game'. Visible from the nearby monument on Garavice Hill is the local cemetery which contains a small, unkempt plot of graves of many who did not succeed—either drowning in the Una river after jumping off the trainline which snakes along beside it, encountering bears or unexploded land mines from the 90's wars, or as a result of injuries sustained by the brutal push-backs administered by the Croatian border police. Additionally, the title references the local football stadium which at the height of the migrant crisis was used as a makeshift refuge for asylum-seekers. In contrast to the rising authoritarianism in Europe at present, Bihać was the first region liberated from Nazi-allied forces in WWII. It was here that the founding principles of Yugoslavia, including its anti-colonial engagement with the global south were first fleshed out . The composition unfolds over nine thematic chapters each focusing on one part of the constellational matrix of sites related to Garavice. Concluding at the point at which a group of asylum-seekers prepare to make a covert, nighttime border crossing. The work is comprised of field recordings created over multiple trips to the region of North-West Bosnia between 2022 and 2024. Captured using ambisonic, contact, coil and shotgun microphones, hydrophones, smartphone and a dashcam.

10. Chrysalis — Paolo Gatti (이탈리아)

〈Chrysalis〉is a stereophonic acousmatic composition based on an extensive exploration of sound transformation through granular synthesis, reverberation, spatialization, and the selective manipulation of specific frequency regions. Its sonic materials include electroacoustic transformations of vocal recordings by the Korean soprano Silvia Lee. Throughout the piece, vocal, environmental, and synthetic materials are progressively deconstructed, fragmented, and recontextualized, generating a continuous dialogue between recognizable sonic traces and abstract electroacoustic textures. The formal structure unfolds through successive accumulations of energy in which timbral density, spectral tension, and spatial movement converge toward climaxes of heightened perceptual intensity. 〈Chrysalis〉shares its genetic material with the tape-and-voice work 〈CRI-NAB〉, yet develops a distinct formal trajectory metaphorically evoking the transformation of a chrysalis into a butterfly. More broadly, the work is conceived as a tribute to transformation as a fundamental principle of both nature and human existence. The composition incorporates original field recordings collected by the composer in natural environments associated with the habitat in which a chrysalis might be found. These recordings include impulsive sonic events produced by moving stones, the crackling of dry leaves, and the subtle noises of branches and undergrowth. Rather than being presented in documentary form, the recordings have been extensively processed through granular transformation, spectral filtering, reverberation, temporal stretching, and spatialization, becoming fully integrated into the electroacoustic fabric of the work.

Van Luber Parensen11. Jendela Terbuka (Through an Opened Window) — Van Luber Parensen (인도네시아)

Through an Opened Window is a sound film constructed from field recordings and conversations collected during my annual homecoming journey from Jakarta to West Sumatra, Indonesia. While rooted in a personal experience of returning home, the work is not intended as a travel diary or a nostalgic account. Instead, it explores how listening unfolds through movement, changing acoustic environments, and encounters with people along the way.

The recordings were made across highways, Merak Port, the ferry crossing the Sunda Strait, roadside rest stops, villages, rivers, and caves in West Sumatra. Alongside environmental sounds, the work incorporates conversations that emerged naturally during the trip, including a conversation with a woman running a small roadside food stall and another with my cousin reflecting on gold mining practices in our hometown. Rather than functioning as interviews, these conversations are presented as integral parts of the sonic landscape.

The composition follows the rhythm of movement and the changing qualities of each place rather than a conventional narrative structure. The work is presented as a collective listening session. English subtitles accompany the spoken conversations, while an illustrated listening score—created after the composition was completed—offers a visual reflection of the listening experience by tracing places, encounters, conversations, and sonic transitions throughout the work. Through this work, listeners are invited to experience a journey not primarily through what is seen, but through what is heard.

Listening to Shibi Intersection #1 is a sound composition developed from field recordings made at Shibi Intersection, located on the border between South Jakarta and Depok, Indonesia. The work explores how everyday urban sound can reveal social relationships that often remain invisible within visual representations of the city. Rather than approaching the intersection as merely a site of traffic congestion or urban infrastructure, the project considers it as a social space where different forms of labor, mobility, and everyday economic exchange intersect. Formal workers returning home interact with informal workers through food vendors and small-scale commerce, creating patterns of mutual dependence that are continuously negotiated within the public space. The composition invites listeners to experience the intersection not through images, but through its sonic environment. The field recordings were collected at Shibi Intersection over a one-month observation period. Recording sessions took place across four days during two time periods: approximately 4:40–5:40 PM and 7:40–8:40 PM, when the intersection experiences its highest level of activity. The recorded material was subsequently composed into a stereo sound work by sound artist Helmi Yusron, transforming documentary field recordings into a composed listening experience while maintaining the acoustic character of the original site. Presented as a 12-minute and 18-second looping stereo composition, the work has no fixed beginning or end, reflecting the continuous and cyclical nature of urban life.

2. Thailand's State Railways: Surat Thani → Hat Yai — Stephen de Filippo (호주·두바이)

Thailand’s State Railways: Surat Thani → Hat Yai is a fixed-media sound work drawn from a larger project documenting a 1,850-kilometre journey through Thailand’s railway network and ferry routes. The work explores travel as a listening practice, tracing the relationships between movement, infrastructure, landscape, and memory across an overnight rail journey through southern Thailand.

Recorded aboard a third-class train travelling between Surat Thani and Hat Yai, the composition combines contact microphone recordings of the train’s material vibrations with environmental recordings captured throughout the journey. The work concludes with recordings made inside Phra Maha Chedi Tripob Trimongkol, where the continuous mechanical resonance of travel gradually merges with the metallic architecture and wind-activated bells of the temple.

Situated between field recording, soundscape composition, and electroacoustic music, the work unfolds through extended duration and attentive listening, inviting audiences to experience the changing acoustic character of travel as a continuous sonic environment.

Medeterranea is an 18-minute stereophonic acousmatic work articulated through a continuous interplay between field-recording materials and liminal sounds. From the macroscopic to the minute, from what happens outside to what unfolds within, the work traces a movement between the "external" and the "internal," between density and rarefaction, between the immediacy of the soundscape and the analytical character of micromontage. Medeterranea unfolds through a sequence of sonic images, moving from the winds of war evoked in the first section, to the waterways of the second, and finally to the hopeful complexity of a new beginning in the final section. The piece is primarily composed of recordings made in different locations across the Mediterranean region. Many of these sounds were selected for their evocative potential and their ability to suggest multiple trajectories, fostering a non-linear listening experience and an open interpretation of the sonic evocations they generate. Medeterranea is the outcome of a research and creative residency at the Groupe de Musique Expérimentale de Marseille (GMEM) in October 2024. The sounds in the piece were recorded using a digital recorder and two external cardioid microphones in an A-B configuration. The soundscape of Medeterranea consists of field recordings made in the city of Marseille, as well as in other locations across the Mediterranean, mainly the larger islands.

Impasse urbaine is born on an artistic research project initiated in 2017, in which I began to develop a multifaceted formalism of sound composition centred on the question of 'inhabiting a country', conceived as a holistic reflection on landscape. This 'geography of feeling' (Guinaud, 2020) offers a way of listening to the world. Gaston Bachelard calls it a "metaphysical connection with place". This landscape is at once vegetal, animal, geological and hydrological, but also human and social. Since 2024, I have focused primarily on peri-urban areas where I have observed land becoming increasingly artificial, urbanisation spreading, the decline of certain biotopes and their replacement by soundscapes characteristic of the technological transformation of the ways in which we inhabit a country. In my exploratory research into the materials constituting the soundscape of the inaudible, I was struck by the omnipresence of technological imprints: dialogues between cranes or robotic construction machinery, the flow of underground networks, vibrations propagating along buildings or through the earth, and electromagnetic waves emanating from connected devices. I perceived and listened to this collection of sound materials as the missing part of the score of the biotope driven out by this urbanisation that has gone mad, seemingly out of control. Impasse urbaine is a musical work that tells the story of the foretold disappearance of a part of the living world that coexists with us. But this composition is also a call for humility, a way of putting the Anthropocene into its proper perspective: that of a mere transitional period, extremely brief on the scale of life. Impasse urbaine begins as it ends: a dialogue between a pair of crows perched on a tree. Their conversation lasted only a short while, during which humans displayed a futile hyperactivity.

I see myself as both a craftsman and a sound artist. I have produced narrative sound pieces for various French and international public radio stations, whilst also broadcasting regularly on the network of French community radio stations. My work in sound creation began with audio documentaries. Over time, it has gradually evolved towards more hybrid productions combining forms drawn from sound art, electroacoustic/electronic composition and field recording, whilst retaining a desire to explore the universality of certain societal issues. I teach sound design and musical composition at Phonurgia Nova, on the CREADOC Master's programme in documentary creation in Angoulême, at the Lussas Documentary School, and at the Montpellier School of Fine Arts. Since 2016, I have mainly been creating sound works for live performance, installations and hybrid live performances. My works have won several international awards and honours (New York Radio Awards, Premios Ondas in Barcelona, Prix Europa in Berlin, Grand Prix Nova in Romania, International Documentary Awards in Los Angeles).

5. At the Hour When the Waters Are Dyed — Thanasis Epitideios (그리스)

[15'42", 2023]

〈At the Hour When the Waters Are Dyed〉는 2022년부터 2023년까지 세 곳의 이오니아 제도에서 녹음한 필드 레코딩만으로 구축한 15분 분량의 스테레오 고정 매체 작곡 작품이다.

At the Hour When the Waters Are Dyed is a fifteen-minute stereo fixed media composition built entirely from field recordings made on three Ionian islands between 2022 and 2023. The question that organises it concerns a change in the listening relation: under what conditions does a recorded place stop sounding like evidence and begin to sound like a memory that can be shared? The listener listens with two presences of very different scale. One is the sea, which has no edges and is not human. The other is a community that still gathers around its bell and its philharmonic band. The two are heard together at the moment when the place they share passes from the familiar into the unfamiliar. The title takes the phrase at the hour when the waters are dyed from the novella Pistoma (face down) by Konstantinos Theotokis (1872–1923), where it marks dusk as the hour of return. Dusk is taken here as a state of transition: the interval in which a sonic entity has ceased to coincide with its source but has not yet become independent of it. That transition runs along three axes, from the realistic to the abstract, from recognising a cause to hearing a shape, and from one place to another. Theoretically the work sits where two traditions meet that are usually treated as opposed. Acoustic ecology approaches field recording as evidence of place (Schafer 1977; Truax 2001). Musique concrète approaches the recorded sound as a sound object, detached from its cause and available to acousmatic listening (Schaeffer 1966). This work holds on to both. It builds a hybrid soundscape in which documentary and acousmatic listening coexist inside the same material. The material was gathered in Corfu, Lefkada and Kefalonia between 2022 and 2023, across three types of location: exposed coastline, agricultural inland, and the historic centre of Corfu town. Processing rests on three operations: high-ratio spectral time stretching (Paulstretch), resonant filtering, and layered reverberation. Each transformation begins from a signal with a clear communal or ecological function and carries it towards the loss of that function, while keeping its traces audible. The three transformations carry the argument of the work: the dark content is already present in the sounds of the place, and processing is what makes it audible.

1. splay: small exchanges — Eurico (포르투갈·한국)

Footsteps, voices and hum surface as fragments, gather into layers, then drift apart. Splay, self-built mixing software, turns audience phones into a temporary speaker system. Different mixes travel close to the body and across the room, shaped by each phone’s small interruptions and accidents.

Feedback creates the conditions through which sound changes in relation. A returning signal comes back in a different state, becoming the cause of further change. Resonance is the moment when these relations briefly take form, while rhythm emerges and disappears through processes of formation, collapse, and return. Existence does not remain anchored to a single center, but is continuously re-formed through relations and conditions.
