Manchester Soundscape is a fixed-media sound work constructed from field recordings collected across Manchester. The work follows a listening journey through several public spaces in the city, including St. Peter's Square, the Corn Exchange, and Long Millgate. Footsteps, traffic, bicycle bells, conversations, water, and architectural resonances form the primary sonic material. The piece emerged from a process of walking and listening through the city. Rather than documenting Manchester as a fixed place, it considers listening as a way of entering into a relationship with urban space. Standing in locations such as the Corn Exchange, listening becomes an encounter not only with present sounds, but also with traces of past lives, movements, and histories embedded within the city. As the work unfolds, environmental recordings gradually dissolve into abstract sonic textures before returning to recognizable urban sounds. This movement reflects a form of listening that shifts between immediate perception, memory, and imagination. Manchester Soundscape proposes listening as a shared act that extends beyond the individual listener. It asks how places may be experienced through accumulated sonic traces, and how listening can connect us not only with a city as it exists today, but also with those who have inhabited, shaped, and passed through it over time.

〈FRAGMENTOS SONORO-URBANOS I (F.S.U.
FRAGMENTOS SONORO-URBANOS I (F.S.U. I) is an experimental electroacoustic/acousmatic composition built from urban field recordings. Rather than documenting a specific location, the work approaches recorded sounds as living material that can be continuously transformed through listening. The field recordings originate from everyday urban environments, capturing ordinary sonic events such as distant voices, animals, mechanical activity, and the constantly shifting textures of public space. Through repetition, temporal displacement, inversion, filtering, and spectral transformation, these familiar sounds gradually lose their documentary function and become part of an evolving acoustic landscape. The piece explores listening as an active relationship with place rather than a passive act of recognition. Instead of presenting the city as a fixed environment, it proposes an experience in which memory, perception, and imagination continuously reshape the meaning of what is heard. In dialogue with the theme "listen with," the work reflects on listening as a shared process that unfolds with places, memories, and the material presence of sound itself. The urban soundscape is not treated as background but as a collaborator in the compositional process.

The Euljiro industrial district. On streets built upon centuries of history, roughly forty thousand people lived and breathed in tandem with machinery. Situated in a landscape of narrow, low alleyways, this workshop-turned-district feels like a massive, endlessly operating machine and a piece of music. Today, however, to those advocating redevelopment, this space is merely noise to be cleared away. Urban planning driven by the logic of capital demands forced demolition. Machines grind to a halt, and artisans lose their homes. I came to feel that humanity's unyielding drive for progress, never looking back, is little different from a machine itself. The dispute over redevelopment between Euljiro residents and developers, ongoing since the 1980s, has accelerated rapidly since 2025. The "2040 Seoul Master Plan" intends to completely reshape Euljiro into a high-rise residential area for high-income earners. The bittersweet reality is that the process of tearing down and dismantling this refuge relies on the very skills and equipment honed over a lifetime by the artisans here. Confronted with this reality, I spent several days traversing the Euljiro printing, metalworking, and machinery manufacturing districts, recording these fading sounds.
Machinery Landscapes uses field recordings from Euljiro as its sole raw material. From the mechanical whirring of printing presses to the working sounds of metal artisans. From trot music drifting in between to the sounds of cooking from small diners at alley corners. I first categorized the collected sounds for composition. Most recorded sounds were heavy machinery noises, and those operating at steady rhythms felt as though they were driving toward their own demise. I intuitively felt that modulating this linear temporality should serve as the primary methodology of composition. Through time-axis manipulation, I disrupted the regular rhythms of the machines, seeking to crack open the timeline driven by the logic of capital. The sounds were then either used as they were or transformed into new sounds through non-linear synthesis, such as frequency modulation and waveshaping, using the sounds themselves as parameters. What followed was a series of extreme fragmentation and intuitive recombination. After categorizing the fragmented sound materials according to frequency range and synthesis methodology, I wove them together once more to form new melodies. Possessing spatiotemporal continuity, these acoustic melodies form up to three layers, constructing a multi-layered narrative within a spatial audio system.
The piece was composed while monitoring in binaural based on a spatial audio setup, remaining open to applying spatial functions across any multi-channel format in the future. The acoustic landscape of this work traverses a three-dimensional space that extends far beyond left and right. The vanishing alleyways and scenes beneath tarps had to be translated in this way. This is why the title takes a plural form (landscapes). These "landscapes" aim to go beyond merely recording the sound of a space, proposing an act of collective listening on a different plane that departs from our everyday reality. This connects deeply with the influence of philosopher Levi R. Bryant, who advocated for "machine-oriented ontology." In Onto-Cartography, he develops a philosophy that views all existing entities as "machines," distinguishing between "material machines" and "immaterial machines," and explaining that "existence" is an "assemblage" of various machines. Non-human machines have long sustained the lives of Euljiro residents, and now they face forced demolition together. Within Machinery Landscapes, their sounds are reborn as immaterial machines of "sound," newly connected. Derived from a disappearing space, this new sonic assemblage paradoxically sings that the space will not disappear entirely, but will continue to "exist."

〈The Sound After Departure〉는 뉴욕시를 비롯해 발길이 닿은 여러 장소에서 진행한 필드 레코딩만으로 창작한 스테레오 고정 매체 작품이다. 〈The Sound After Departure〉는 떠나는 것, 남는 것, 그리고 그 이후에도 계속 울려 퍼지는 것들과 함께 듣는다.
The Sound After Departure is a stereo fixed-media work created entirely from field recordings made in New York City and other encountered locations. Its materials include railway and subway platforms, approaching and departing trains, stationary trains, public announcements, passenger movement, ventilation, rail vibration, mechanical resonance, and the reflected sound of transit architecture. The work responds to the Sonic Nomads 2026 theme, "listen with," by considering departure not as an instant of disappearance, but as a condition that continues after a train, person, or sound source has left. After a train departs, vibration remains in the platform, reflections continue inside the station, and announcements persist in memory. The listener's body may also retain the pressure and motion of the event. The title refers to these residual sounds and altered states of attention: what remains audible after the apparent source is gone. The composition asks whether we listen only to what is leaving, or also with the architecture, machines, passengers, memories, and surfaces that remain. Field recording is treated as a reciprocal encounter. The recordist listens to a place, but the place also receives the recordist's movement, body, microphone, and temporary presence. The work follows a broad trajectory: waiting, approach, arrival, stopping, announcement, transfer, movement, departure, and environmental afterimage. This sequence is not a documentary reconstruction of one journey. Recordings made at different times and locations are combined into a composite acoustic space. All audible material is derived from the field recordings. No external instrumental or synthesizer layer is used. The recordings also influence one another through a process I describe as cross-listening. In this process, the characteristics of one recording shape how another becomes audible. The ending is quiet rather than dramatic. Faint residues of announcements, station resonance, and movement remain after the train has departed. The Sound After Departure listens with what leaves, what remains, and what continues to resonate afterward.

〈Metanomad〉is about driving. Not arrival, not destinations—just the act of driving itself, the endless repetition of it. I became fascinated by the idea that people spend enormous amounts of time inside cars, moving through the same types of roads, hearing the same soundscapes over and over. A highway in Seoul sounds structurally similar to a highway in Berlin. I recorded extensively from inside cars and along highways: the engine at different speeds and throttle positions, idling, acceleration, deceleration. Tire noise on asphalt, on wet pavement, on different road textures. Wind through windows. The mechanical sounds of the car itself—door closures, gear shifts, brake systems. I avoided iconic or memorable locations deliberately. Rather than using them to tell a story about travel, I decomposed them. I granulated the engine sounds into textures, reversed them, pitch-shifted them until they become unrecognizable. A car engine at 2000 RPM becomes a sustained drone. The piece cycles continuously through the same 35-second structure. In each cycle, granular layers fade out, then a fragment of car recording enters at a random starting point and plays for 10 to 15 seconds before the algorithmic textures return. I also modulated the piece through three different microtonal tuning systems—13-EDO, 14-EDO, and 15-EDO. Everything is spatialized in three-dimensional binaural space around the listener's head. It's designed for headphone listening, so the car environment surrounds you. The whole system is generated in SuperCollider. It could theoretically run forever, each 35-second cycle producing different permutations while maintaining the same fundamental structure. Like driving itself. You're listening with the engine, with the road, with the strange solitude of driving.

Listen with ATMs: Electromagnetic Infrastructures of Consumption is a stereo fixed-media work adapted from a four-channel installation originally presented at The Arches, Newcastle University in 2026. The work was created by The Feral Sounds Ensemble, bringing together Rob Mackay, Usue Ruiz Arana of Newcastle University in the UK and Gerard Ryan of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Catalonia, Spain. The ATM sits in the wall, waiting for a card, a hand, a code, a withdrawal, a failed transaction, a moment of trust. It belongs to the ordinary choreography of the street. Yet the machine also has a sonic life that usually remains outside ordinary perception. Through electromagnetic listening, that life becomes audible as a restless texture of pulses, interruptions, electrical tones and unstable signals. The work responds to the Sonic Nomads 2026 theme 'Listen With' by treating listening as something shared between bodies, devices, machines and places. The work proposes a way of listening with infrastructure, and with the technological background of consumer life. The recordings were made in Newcastle, especially around ATMs and the commercial infrastructure of the city's main street. The recordings were made using electromagnetic listening devices (Ether by SOMA) rather than conventional microphones. These devices translate electromagnetic emissions into audible sound. The recordings capture pulses, hums, interruptions and wavering signals generated by the machines and their electronic environment. These sounds are not designed for public listening, yet they are produced by systems that shape everyday movements through the city.

(On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies)」에서 영감을 받아, 〈Sobre a eletrodinâmica dos corpos de trabalho(노동하는 물체의 전기역학에 관하여)〉는 Viseu Rural 아카이브에 담긴 데이드(Dade) 말요가 채석장의 콘크리트 공장에 대한, 시간이 왜곡된 시선을 제공한다(이 녹음이 유일한 음원이다).
Inspired by Einstein's paper introducing the special theory of relativity titled "On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies," Sobre a eletrodinâmica dos corpos de trabalho offers a time-distorted view of the concrete plant in Quarry Maljoga in Dade from the Viseu Rural archive (the only sound source). It portrays the work as it echoes off the landscape in compressed time, frozen time, and smeared timelines. It is a reflection on the efforts of man-made forces, the persistence of natural forces over time, and the interfaces between them. Keywords: Nature, construction, erosion, time distortion. Albert Einstein famously asked what would happen if he rode alongside a beam of light and looked into a mirror: sound from the rural concrete plant are fed into a network of delay lines that shift as if they are mirrors moving so fast that the effects of special relativity distort time and transform the sounds into new textures, gestures, and motives. The source material and the structure of the sound processing reflect on the impacts of mankind upon nature and nature upon mankind over the longest spans of time, how each invades and erodes the other so that what persists is something new that illuminates the inner character of each. (This piece originally won First Prize in the Viseu Rural 2.0 competition as an audio-only, stereophonic work, accompanied by a photograph.)

〈If Only It Could Speak…〉는 덴마크 스트루어에 있는 사운드 아트 랩에서 인턴으로 일하는 동안 녹음한 소리만으로 창작한 고정 매체 작곡 작품이다.
If Only It Could Speak… is a fixed-media composition created entirely from recordings made during my internship at Sound Art Lab in Struer, Denmark. The work combines a microphone recording from a former sound-deadened chamber with electromagnetic recordings captured throughout the building using a homemade EMF microphone. No instruments or externally generated sound sources are used. Every sound originates from within the building, although much of the raw electromagnetic material has been edited, layered and transformed through digital sound processing. Sound Art Lab and Sound Hub Denmark occupy former Bang & Olufsen facilities in Struer. The site also carries a history connected to the German occupation of Denmark. Several Bang & Olufsen employees were active in the Danish resistance movement. During the night of 14 January 1945, the company's factory was destroyed in an act of Schalburgtage. Today, a bent steel beam recovered from the destroyed factory stands as a memorial in front of Sound Art Lab. Most of the source material was recorded using a homemade electromagnetic microphone. Rather than capturing airborne sound, the microphone detects electromagnetic activity produced by powered objects and electrical infrastructure. I recorded old electrical panels, printers, soldering stations, air-conditioning and ventilation systems, power relays, oscillators, transformers. The only conventional microphone recording in the work was made inside a former sound-deadened test chamber. As a result, the chamber had become almost the opposite of what it was built to be. Instead of absorbing sound, it was highly reflective and resonant. In relation to the theme "listen with," the work proposes listening with the building rather than simply listening to it. I listen with its electrical currents, obsolete machinery, altered rooms, historical traces and remaining infrastructure. The building becomes both the subject of the work and an active collaborator.

As AI-generated audio saturates our everyday soundscape, it presents itself as clean, seamless, and "source-less". This piece listens instead to its residue, to the noise, failure, and material sediment that the technology conceals. I prompted commercial systems with sounds outside its training such as electric hums, multiphonics, extended vocal techniques and received "empty" audio files in return. Compressing these silences revealed a dense, gritty residual noise, the sonic imprint of the machine itself. From an hour of this material, bounced repeatedly to cassette tape and processed through a timbre-transfer model trained on those same degraded tapes, I composed the piece entirely from what the technology discards. Generation Loss is a piece built from sonic waste recirculated through analog and digital media and becoming the substance of the composition (like a plastistone slowly merging plastic waste with sand, coral, and rock fragments, forming a new form of sonic compound).

Sichuan Flavor Aesthetics is a fixed-media sound work developed from an extensive field recording project conducted in Chengdu, China. Rather than documenting the city objectively, the work explores listening as a method of understanding place, memory and cultural experience. The composition combines environmental recordings, everyday urban sounds, traditional cultural practices and electroacoustic processing to create a sonic portrait that moves between documentary observation and artistic interpretation. Instead of treating field recording as a neutral act of documentation, I approach recording as an active dialogue between the listener, the recording technologies, the surrounding environment and the cultural context in which sounds are encountered. The recordings were collected across a wide range of locations in Chengdu, including parks, traditional teahouses, temples, riversides, mountain areas, markets and Sichuan opera venues. Rather than following a predetermined recording route, I designed a custom Max/MSP patch that randomly generated recording tasks by selecting different locations, recording conditions and microphone types. The project used omnidirectional microphones for environmental ambience, contact microphones to capture the internal vibrations of objects, hydrophones for underwater recordings, ultrasonic microphones for frequencies beyond human hearing, electromagnetic sensors for electronic emissions, binaural microphones for embodied listening, parabolic microphones for distant sound sources, together with shotgun microphones, geophones and analogue microcassette recorders where appropriate. Rather than functioning simply as technical equipment, these devices became different ways of listening. Throughout the project, conversations with local residents also played an important role. Memories of disappearing street sounds, traditional performances and everyday sonic practices informed later recording decisions and occasionally led to the recreation of sounds that could no longer be encountered naturally.

〈Post Border〉is a soundscape work depicting a journey from Seoul in the south to Pyongyang in the north in the near future, imagining a day when the border dividing the Korean Peninsula, the world's only divided nation, disappears. Passing through the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the boundary that has separated the two regions for decades, the piece audibly expresses the traces of war remaining there alongside nature that has grown untouched by human hands for a long time. The atmosphere sensed in each city is cold yet captures a changing future, structuring the various sounds emerging along the way into a single musical flow.
The work began with a curiosity about the DMZ, a space that has existed for decades as a site of military confrontation due to the division between North and South. In particular, longings and imaginings surrounding the natural environment and wildlife preserved during the time human access was restricted served as the starting point. The DMZ is a rare space in human history born of human conflict and hostility, yet paradoxically, it is also a place where nature was protected through isolation from human presence. The piece is structured as a single journey departing from Seoul, passing through the DMZ, and arriving in Pyongyang. Although the actual width of the DMZ is only about one-tenth of the distance between Seoul and Pyongyang, this section lingers for the longest duration within the work. This is intended to express the sensation of time passing more slowly in an unknown space, representing the most vital element the work seeks to address. The progression from Seoul toward the DMZ centers around everyday urban noises, while a gradually pressuring spatial sense reflects the tension of entering an unknown realm. Layered sounds of rain and ambulances create the cold atmosphere of a city at dawn. In the section leading past the DMZ toward Pyongyang, sounds of nature, machinery, and human voices begin to mix intricately, depicting the formation of a new foundation for life and shifting toward a gradually hopeful atmosphere.

〈Pulsi Ciklik i Tiranës〉 is a fixed-media sound composition based on longitudinal field recordings from the urban center of Tirana and its surrounding infrastructural and ecological zones. The work does not aim to document the city in an objective or archival sense, nor to aestheticize urban sound as a self-contained sonic object. Instead, it approaches composition as a mode of inquiry grounded in listening, where sound becomes a way of sensing how urban time is organized through overlapping rhythms. In this sense, the work is aligned with an understanding of rhythmanalysis (Henri Lefebvre), in which rhythm is not a fixed pattern but the interaction of repetition and difference in time. The sound material originates from repeated soundwalks conducted between October 2024 and February 2026 in Tirana, primarily in the central square of Sheshi Skënderbej and its surrounding streets, with additional recordings made at the Artificial Lake of Tirana (Liqeni Artificial i Tiranës). Within Sheshi Skënderbej, one of the primary sonic layers is pedestrian circulation, where footsteps form cyclical patterns of movement rather than isolated events. Alongside these everyday movements, construction activity introduces a persistent infrastructural rhythm that has become one of the dominant temporal structures of contemporary Tirana. Traffic contributes another cyclical layer, particularly through the repeated patterns of buses along fixed routes. Church bells introduce a contrasting rhythmic structure, operating as stable cyclical markers that organize time into predictable intervals across the urban field. Construction sounds, traffic, pedestrian movement, and vocal exchanges coexist without resolving into a unified soundscape. Instead, they form a polyrhythmic field in which multiple temporal systems overlap without synchronization. At a later stage, the sound material shifts toward recordings made at the Artificial Lake of Tirana, where the rhythmic structure changes significantly. bird calls—particularly the call-and-response patterns of ducks—together with aquatic interactions produce relational rather than mechanical repetition. What remains constant throughout the work is the presence of cyclicality itself, understood not as repetition of the same, but as repetition with variation. Pulsi Ciklik i Tiranës ultimately proposes that urban experience is organized less through static structures than through continuously interacting temporal regimes.

I imagine the weather of another place, or another time. A rainy night on Mount Fuji, heard once, left a faint pull toward a place I hardly know. Could that pull also reach the air between listening machines? If we listen together to a place that is only a dot on a map, it may stop being only a dot.

Every sound bears the imprint of the movement from which it emerged. What we perceive as a single event is the condensed result of countless contacts, vibrations, repetitions, and collisions accumulated into subtle transformations.
〈Invisible Currents〉 explores modes of listening that lie beyond ordinary human perception by stretching, dissecting, and resynthesizing sounds captured from the physical world. Through this process, the work traces the relationships embedded within each sound, uncovering latent musical possibilities and developing them into the form of a performance.

Bryan Donghyuk Lee is a Seoul-based composer whose work explores sound as a physical phenomenon and a mode of perception. His music begins with close attention to seemingly ordinary sonic events, uncovering the complex relationships of movement, resonance, and material embedded within them.
It begins with the sounds of Seoripul Park. One after another, insects in the grass, cows, goats and sheep pass through — sounds the two performers gathered in Jeju, Switzerland and Mongolia. Among them flies a bird that exists nowhere: a voice no real bird ever sang, brought out by a machine that learned one hundred kinds of birdsong.
The two pass sound to each other. What one hands over comes back from the other's hands a little lower, a little thicker, a little changed. No sound stays wholly its own; each brushes past the next and carries away a trace of it. Cows, goats, insects and a bird that isn't there brush past one another in a single room.
When everything has passed, the sound of the park remains. For the last minute, no one plays. Together with everyone gathered there, we listen to the place where those sounds have just been. After distant places and places that do not exist, we arrive where we began: now, here.
