1. Frog Croaks in a Well — Magda Lampropoulou (그리스)

I was walking along a dirt road through the olive groves near my village one early evening in April 2023 when, for the very first time, I heard a sound like a strange birdsong. I followed it deeper among the olive trees until I discovered a well. To my surprise, it was not birdsong at all, but an incredible chorus of frogs. The village, called Raches, is located in the rural region of the Peloponnese in Greece. As it happened unexpectedly, the recording was made with my iPhone near the open well (approximately 1–2 meters away), and you may hear background noises, including dogs and chickens.

I composed this soundscape using field recordings of various cicada sounds collected in the hills of Sentul, Babakan Madang, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. The recordings were gathered through repeated listening while trail running and hiking, transforming these activities into an ongoing listening practice. The work presents a sound composition that traces the sonic presence of tonggeret (cicadas) within a rapidly changing landscape. The project emerges from listening as both an embodied experience and a method of observing environmental transformation. The hills of Sentul have undergone increasingly intensive development, with new infrastructure, recreational facilities, and beautified trails reshaping a landscape once defined by ecological relationships. Rather than documenting these changes directly, the soundscape invites listeners to encounter the voices of cicadas as witnesses to (and participants in) this transformation. Their persistent calls become a means of reflecting on shifting relationships between humans, landscapes, and non-human life, while speculating on how environmental change reconfigures ways of listening.

This piece began with a fact that struck me as strange enough to sit with: fireflies produce ultrasonic clicks during flight, yet the firefly cannot hear the sound it produces. A creature producing sound it will never hear. The work emerged after reading Ksenia Krivoruchko's research, followed by a correspondence in which she generously shared the original field recordings, publicly available datasets, MATLAB analysis scripts, and details of how the recordings were made. Composed from these slowed ultrasonic recordings alongside electronic instrumentation, the composition explores what it means to listen to sounds that exist beyond the threshold of human hearing. The composition stages an imagined encounter between firefly and bat as a single unfolding scene rather than a fixed-tempo track. I deliberately avoided composing to a BPM. Nature has rhythm, but not a human metric grid, and I did not want to force the recordings into one. Instead, the listener is invited to encounter the work the way one encounters a painting: as a continuously unfolding sonic landscape rather than music counted in bars. Two "blips"—firefly and bat—gradually enter the sonic canvas. At the climax, the two occupy the same acoustic space without becoming a literal call-and-response. Their coexistence is inspired by the concept of jugalbandi in Hindustani classical music—not as a responsive duet, but as two independent voices sharing time and space while retaining their own identities. Ultimately, the piece asks what it means to compose with sounds that were never intended to be heard: sounds that exist not as messages, but as traces of movement.

4. Entomology#2 — Thanos Polymeneas-Liontiris (그리스·영국)

Entomology#2 (2025) is an acousmatic work dedicated to the secret life of insects. It follows on Tettix-A' (2022 – inspired by the song of cicadas) and Entomology#1 (2024 – an acousmatic miniature based on the voice of a single imaginary insect). Entomology#2 invites the ear to a bustling landscape: an imaginary pond, a hyper-realistic dense forest, a place where countless microscopic flying voices weave their own world. The material of Entomology#2 derives from recordings of a prepared grand piano (in German Flügel, in Dutch Vleugelpiano: i.e. piano with wings). The piece is based on the navigation of a corpus made of these recordings, processed to such extent as to be stripped from any obvious piano connotation: metaphysically the notion of "wings" is the only association kept from those original prepared piano recordings. The corpus of these processed sounds unfolded into a layered and multi-dimensional field, inspiring an exploration similar to that of spatial-sonic explorations of a filed-recording. The result of such explorations is a soundscape filled with densities, like countless flying beings swarming and coexisting. The focus shifts to multiplicity, coexistence, and swarm-like textures; A sonic approach to a living universe of microscopic organisms, where communication, competition, and adaptation unfold collectively, like an endless dance.

5. Sardinian Woods — Teresa Virginia Salis (TVS) (이탈리아)

"Sardinian Woods" transcends linear time through an immersive soundscape that engages directly with the structural and temporal dynamics of acceleration. The work abstracts the wild morphology of the Mediterranean environment—transforming raw field recordings of rustling pines, aeolian resonance, and macro-details into decoupled, autonomous sonic entities. Operating as a continuous morphological continuum, the piece constructs a virtual causality where the organic heartbeat of the forest interlocks with granular, synthetic pulses. This relationship triggers a progressive accumulation of energetic states. As the composition unfolds, human presence acts as a catalyst for acceleration, destabilizing the natural landscape. This manifested tension alters the information flow, driving microscopic temporal shifts and a dense superimposition of sonic layers. Through dynamic spectral processing and spatialization, the auditory duality between untamed nature and human architecture intensifies. The accumulation of density to a deliberate dissolution of form, where the boundaries between organic and synthetic completely collapse into a state of hyper-accelerated motion.

7. PEACE WIND — Domenico De Simone (이탈리아)

〈PEACE WIND〉is an electroacoustic composition based on field recordings that investigates listening as a way of encountering the living dynamics of a place. Rather than depicting a landscape, the work creates an evolving sonic environment in which natural and electronically transformed sounds coexist, continuously reshaping one another. The wind becomes more than a sound source: it acts as a living presence that reveals subtle relationships between space, time and perception. Through this process, listening becomes an active practice of attention rather than the passive reception of acoustic events. The work is built from recordings of the wind captured in the rural landscape of Macchia Valfortore, Southern Italy. These recordings constitute the core material of the composition and preserve the acoustic identity of the site from which they originate. Electronic processing is employed not to conceal their origin but to disclose details that often remain hidden during everyday listening. Spectral transformations, changes in temporal scale and spatial articulation extend the expressive potential of the recordings while maintaining a perceptible connection with the original environment. […] In relation to the theme listen with, the work proposes listening with the landscape, with the movement of air, with memory and with the imagination activated by sound.

8. Dull Weather — Kenji Tsuzuki (일본)

Dull Weather is an electroacoustic work that seeks to recreate in sound the movement of upslope fog ascending a mountainside beneath an overcast sky. Water rises as vapor and forms clouds, eventually returning to the earth as rain and beginning the cycle again. Human activity follows a similar process: individuals gather to form communities, disperse, and then assemble once more. Through field recordings, the work explores the common patterns that emerge across otherwise different environments, presenting fog as a multilayered sonic phenomenon. The primary recordings were made along the coastline of Sendai. Sounds recorded outside Japan, including in Crest, France, are also interwoven throughout the work, evoking the recurring cycles of activity found across different places.

El Grito de Keyes, Maine is a field-recording composition developed from sounds collected during a residency at the Keyes property in Harrington, Maine. Located between a dense forest and the sea, the site contains a complex acoustic environment in which natural, human-made, distant, and immediate sounds continuously overlap. The work approaches this environment not simply as a collection of identifiable sound sources, but as an active system in which geography, weather, vegetation, distance, and human activity shape how each sound is produced and perceived. The recording process began as a form of attentive exploration. I walked repeatedly through the camp, the areas surrounding the small cabin, the forest paths, the shoreline, and the bay, recording at different locations and times of day. The collected material includes birds, insects, wind, moving water, waves, branches, leaves, fishing boats, motors, and other machinery connected to life and work along the coast. A central question throughout the process was not only what produces a sound, but how the environment changes that sound. The forest and the sea create very different acoustic behaviors. The open water allows sounds to travel across considerable distances, making boats and machinery audible before their sources can be clearly seen. The forest, by contrast, contains the sound within layers of trees, leaves, irregular surfaces, and changing densities. These conditions produce natural forms of reverberation, reflection, filtering, repetition, and delay. These natural acoustic effects became fundamental compositional materials. Rather than treating reverberation and delay as processes that needed to be added digitally, I listened for the versions already present in the environment. The compositional process uses very little additional digital processing. The piece is constructed through selection, editing, layering, repetition, changes in density, and the placement of contrasting or related recordings alongside one another. The project is also developing beyond the fixed composition through an interactive sound map. Through the fixed composition and the interactive map, El Grito de Keyes, Maine considers field recording as both documentation and composition: a process of encountering a place, observing how it produces and transforms sound, and creating new conditions through which that place can be heard.

〈Listening with the River〉는 이탈리아 토스카나에서 채집한 강물의 필드 레코딩을 바탕으로 한 음향 작품이다.

Listening with the River is a sound work based on field recordings of a flowing river captured in Tuscany, Italy. The original environmental sounds were processed through autom@tedMusiC, a generative software system developed by Sergio Maltagliati for the transformation and reorganization of sonic materials. Rather than functioning as a documentary recording, the work explores the space between natural sound, memory and digital transformation. The composition unfolds as a dialogue between the physical presence of the river and its algorithmic reinterpretation. Water movements, resonances, micro-rhythms and acoustic details are continuously transformed through generative processes, creating evolving textures that oscillate between recognition and abstraction. At the heart of the work is the act of listening. The river is approached not simply as an environmental sound source, but as a living presence whose identity changes over time. Through digital intervention, the field recording becomes a space for reflection on flow, impermanence and the relationship between natural phenomena and technological systems.

CLIMATE EXPRESSION 3 is my third work dedicated to climate change. I'm currently reflecting on how we can perceive the problem of climate change in our souls. I believe music can do this. All my works have always addressed societal issues, and I will continue along this path. The sound objects were recorded on the waterfront in Bari, Italy, where I live.

12. Cimenyan — Fahmi Mursyid (인도네시아)

Within the mist-laden forests of Tahura in Cimenyan, where mountain air drifts through towering trees and forgotten paths descend into the earth, this fixed-media sound work emerges from attentive listening. Field recordings collected among rustling leaves, hidden streams, insects, birds, and the cavernous interiors of the Dutch and Japanese caves become traces of a landscape that breathes across multiple timescales. The forest speaks not only through its living ecologies but also through the silent histories embedded in stone, carrying memories of both growth and occupation beneath its green canopy. These recordings are transformed through granular synthesis and glitch processes, dissolving the certainty of their origins. A single droplet becomes a constellation of fractured echoes; birdsong splinters into shimmering fragments; the wind stretches into restless harmonic shadows. Sounds drift between the organic and the synthetic, between presence and disappearance. The work inhabits the fragile threshold between wonder and warning. As environmental crises reshape ecosystems across the world, the forest becomes both witness and participant in an uncertain future. The subterranean caves resonate like deep listening chambers, amplifying echoes from the past while confronting the instability of the present. Through shifting layers of beauty, noise, and rupture, the piece invites listeners to wander through an imagined forest where every sound carries a question: what remains when the landscapes that sustain us begin to disappear?

This winter, I was asked to compose a soundscape piece in eight channels as part of Barry Truax’s soundscape composition course. Montreal’s keynote sound in February is thousands of vehicles in grey slush, so I opted to revisit recordings from my summer. Diving into a recording of a distant loon couple I made whilst lingering by the fire, Fire Loon unpacks and repackages this material while maintaining recognizability, augmenting pre-existing qualities of the sounds and painting a few new ideas into the picture. Imagine yourself by the fire, near the water.

Composed at Concordia University. 8.252, Ogo Octophonic studio.

<Aides… mémoires…>

[4'13", 2026]

As we are faced more and more with the noise of a world which is falling apart - economically, politically, culturally and on many other levels, we might find ourselves turning inwards to shut out that noise and to focus on what we hear around us in our everyday movements. This piece reflect that search for solace in a noisy world, allowing sound to take us to other places from those "intended", but where the real world continues to haunt us with these sounds bringing into focus images which reflect the damage we are doing to the planet and its inhabitants. Protected from the wind and from traffic noise from a nearby road, the peaceful ambience of Sandhaven Harbour invited me in to listen more deeply. As the jetty was floating and the movement of the water in the harbour was minimal, the gentle creaking of wood and metalwork often sounded animalistic, sometimes reminiscent of whale song at other times, of injured or dying animals uttering their last breath. I worked with these "animalistic" groans, transforming them to create further utterances. The piece forms part of the Aides… mémoires… project with Jonty Harrison, consisting of short form pieces (3-6') made from single field recordings. Recording made at Sandhaven Harbour, Sandhaven, Aberdeenshire, UK on 3 January 2020. The work was originally created in third order ambisonics and this is the preferred version for concert hall performance or for listening in a group context. However, it is still possible to experience some of the spatial aspects of the piece by listening in stereo.

3. Pirapitinga Vaz'a Baril — Dudu Prudente (브라질·벨기에)

Pirapitinga Vaz’a Baril is an acousmatic and field-recording-based sound piece inspired by the Vaza-Barris, one of the most historically and culturally significant rivers in the Northeast region of Brazil. The work explores the river not merely as a geographic body of water stretching 450 km from the dry sertão of Bahia to the Atlantic Ocean in Aracaju, but as a living, ancestral entity and a repository of deep collective memory.

The title reclaims the river's indigenous names (Parapitinga or Ipiranga), evoking a pre-colonial era when the waters represented a spiritual and material source of life. Through specialized environmental listening, the piece confronts this deep temporal heritage with the modern ecological scars of deforestation and real estate speculation, capturing a soundscape that balances environmental vulnerability with historical resilience.

[6'38"]

I have always been captivated by the elegance of bamboo—its tall, unyielding posture and the delicate dance of its leaves. It evokes a profound artistic resonance within me, perfectly captured by the Song Dynasty poet Su Shi: "I would rather eat without meat than live without bamboo." In my hometown of Hsinchu, Taiwan, the surrounding landscapes are beautifully defined by these verdant bamboo groves. Tragically, recent years have seen environmental preservation take a backseat to commercial interests. Driven by the allure of profit, landowners have permitted developers to clear these lands for recreational facilities. Consequently, the nearby forests—including my beloved bamboo groves—are being ruthlessly felled. Despite the earnest protests of local organizations striving to protect the area's natural heritage, their efforts have not succeeded, and the destruction continues unabated. In response, as a sound artist, I initiated a creative project rooted in field recordings of my hometown's vanishing bamboo forests. My goal is to capture and preserve the natural soundscape of these groves before they are lost forever, recognizing that acoustic ecology is a vital component of our living environment. Using digital technology, I manipulate these field recordings—introducing new harmonies, rhythms, spatial dimensions, and timbres—to unearth the hidden, "unheard" inner voices of the bamboo. By interweaving these digitally transformed tones with the raw, original field recordings, I created the final sound art piece: Metascape of Bamboo. It exists as a true "metascape," oscillating fluidly between the tangible reality of the natural sounds and the ethereal quality of the processed audio. This interplay creates a dynamic contrast that mirrors the Eastern philosophical concepts of yin and yang, blurring the lines between virtuality and reality.

5. dans la plaine incertaine — leo magnien (프랑스)

[9'38", 2024]

〈dans la plaine incertaine〉 explores the tension between an apparently sparse, minimal soundscape, and the actual amount of details that appear once one gets closer. Freezing rain has encapsulated all things in a layer of ice. Yet the trees are moving. Ice pellets fill the sky with diffractions of every sound from the plain. Further away, a fireplace keeps a small window lit with the comforting idea of a warm blanket. As hinted in the program notes, the field recording is done on a winter night. A hedge of 5 to 7 meter-high trees were entirely covered in freezing rain. The wind was making the trees sway, and with the ice around them the sound was peculiar. Recording is done with a pair of MKH8040 in ORTF configuration, into a Sonosax Minir82 recorder. The microphones were held on a boom at a height of about 2-3 meters, as close to the trees as possible. Even with such a close foreground, the most interesting thing to me in this sound is the background, where many things happen through the wind in further trees and the sparse human activity in the distant plain. The synthesized sounds in the piece are chosen to provide a contrast and a mirror that leads the attention to all the details in this simple yet dense scene.

leo magnien (1985) works with sounds, fixed and living as well. During night shifts in a radio station, he discovered the poetic nature of acousmatic sound and transmission. He has since developed a practice of listening that results in the use of phonography as a basis of all his works. He considers sound as a tactile media that weaves us in the world. His focus is on the subtle variations, the tenuous perceptions, and how to present these to the listener. He currently lives in a natural zone in northern france.

6. Surface Obsessions I — Prabuddha Mukhopadhyay (인도)

I have been obsessing over sounds, in their raw state, without any acoustic characteristics of a space imbued in them. I have used a lot of surface recordings done with contact mics. All these recordings are then EQ'd later to create specific musical chords to introduce a sense of musicality. I also recorded my own body with a contact mic to record my own heartbeat, which has been used in this work in a more synthesised manner. This piece starts with a recording of lively, beautiful species. However, as we move forward, new, unconventional sounds are introduced—sounds of surface vibrations, soils, etc, which are not audible in bare ears. All these are free from any acoustic characteristics of a space imbibed in them. This composition is basically a journey, where the sense of space gradually gets lost as we move our ear away from the space toward the resonating surface of the same space. I conceptualised, recorded, produced, and mixed this work on my own.

I am a sound artist and sound designer trained at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in Kolkata, India. While my practice is grounded in film sound, I am equally drawn to sound art, field recording, and the creative possibilities of shaping real-world sound in new media contexts. My work explores spatial audio, binaural recording, Ambisonics, and the use of unconventional microphones to uncover overlooked textures and sonic perspectives. Recordings and sound works of mine have been featured on platforms like Radiophrenia Glasgow, Cities and Memories (Oxford), and Resonance FM, among others.

Insektarion is a piece about Wroclaw - one of the biggest cities in Poland. "My" Wroclaw is not so much the city's audiosphere, but rather a mental sketch of memory. The work established anew the atmosphere, sound logos, symbols and sonic emblems recalling different situations and people in Wroclaw. I used a field recordings made by myself and from the archive of the Soundscape Research Studio of the University of Wroclaw.

8. Aides… mémoires… — Jonty Harrison & Pete Stollery (영국)

[Crushed (Jonty Harrison, 3'31", 2024) / Clermont Horns (Pete Stollery, 4'51", 2020) / At the End of the Tunnel (Jonty Harrison, 5'58", 2020/21)]

· Crushed — Jonty Harrison

· Clermont Horns — Pete Stollery

· At the End of the Tunnel — Jonty Harrison

〈Aides… mémoires…〉is an ongoing, evolving project, comprising short acousmatic pieces (3–6 minutes long) by Jonty Harrison and Pete Stollery. Each piece is based on a field recording made in a particular location on a particular day, evoking specific memories of place and time for the composer, but also hopefully – through shared listening ('listening with') – prompting memories of similar experiences in others. The project allows us to revisit our personal archives of field recordings collected around the world over several decades – sound material that has usually not found its way into our other pieces. The pieces range in nature (sometimes within each one) from 'reportage' to 'abstraction' and are often characterised by seeming to place the listener in unlikely, if not impossible, locations. Each piece is composed by just one or other of us; these are not 'joint compositions'.

· Crushed – Jonty Harrison
On a trip to Iceland in search of new sound materials, I was introduced by Lisa Whistlecroft and Steve Benner to the rusting remains of an old crushing machine (part of an abandoned pumice working on the slopes of Stapafell, near Snæfellsjökull) which I recorded with both air and contact microphones. Despite the beauty of the coastline of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula stretching away to the east of the location, the sense of neglect and desolation was emphasised by the distant calls of seabirds and the low, heavy Icelandic sky.

· Clermont Horns – Pete Stollery
This piece is made from one single field recording I made when I was in Clermont Ferrand gathering data for a project with photographer John Perivolaris and writer Ed Welch. I heard the sound of car horns in the distance and immediately reached for my recording device, entranced by the harmonies of the constantly smearing car horn sounds. At this point, all three of us were unaware that this was the first weekend of the Gilets Jaunes demonstrations in France in Nov 2018.

· At the End of the Tunnel – Jonty Harrison
To enable cars to drive the entire length of the transporter train which runs through the Channel Tunnel between France and the UK, the carriages are linked by overlapping floor panels and rubber gaskets. In motion, the friction between these elements creates a wealth of squeaks and squeals, all underpinned by the constant drumming of the wheels on the track. The space between the carriages (i.e. inside the gaskets) is a wonderful place for listening (and recording)! The irony of composing a piece based on a major link between the UK and Europe at the very time that the Brexit negotiations were in their tense final phase (the stage referred to as 'entering the tunnel') was not lost on me.

9. Nullius in Verba — Robert Scott Thompson (미국)

〈Nullius in Verba〉 translates from the Latin as "on the word of no one." This acousmatic composition incorporates field and studio recordings and their transformation and elaboration. Sound sources include vocal, percussion, flute and 'cello sources together with mechanical and environmental sounds. The music is conceived as a kind of "song without words," and in working on it, I was reminded of Mendelssohn: "What the music I love expresses to me, is not thought too indefinite to be put into words, but on the contrary, too definite." Techniques used for the work include ambisonic spatialization and spectral transformation methods. Tools used include Kyma, Csound, Metasynth, Cecelia, Trajectory and Spat Revolution.

Live Performance #2 (19:30–21:30)

From Earth to Earth — Kylie Oh (한국·독일)

From Earth to Earth(지구에서, 지구에게) is a live composition inspired by 1980s Japanese sci-fi anime. The composition invites listeners into "listening with the Earth," moving away from the permanent hyper-capitalist soundscape. It unfolds in two contrasting movements: a generative neural model trained on field recordings, and a live feedback loop of ground vibrations sensed by a geophone on site.

Kylie Oh is a sound artist based in Seoul and Cologne. She works with music and sound to create shared memories among people gathered in live settings. Her practice centers on electronic composition using spatial sound, field recording, and sound coding. She is interested in cities and the environment, synesthesia, and the possibilities of democratic connection.

Unfamiliar environments, spaces, and communities.
Intersecting experiences, emotions, and relationships.

The distance between oneself and a new world.
The friction that arises as individuals and their surroundings learn to accept one another.

Even so, we approach one another while carrying our own sense of unfamiliarity, and form a community together.
